Tawau: Muslims nationwide can check "kiblat" directions (prayer direction) for their homes or prayer areas on Thursday, starting 5.28pm.
Islamic Training Institute of Malaysia Deputy Director, Omar Said, said "kiblat" directions could be checked on that day and time, based on the traditional method of looking where the sun set.
He said at that time, the sun's position would be right above the Kaabah in Mecca, which is the guide for Muslims when conducting prayers.
"Failure to determine its precise direction can cause a deviation of several kilometres," he said, while speaking at the launch of a State-level 'kiblat' course here, Monday.
The course, organised by the institute, with cooperation of the Department of Islamic Development, Sabah Mufti Office and Sabah Islamic Affairs Department, saw the participation of 44 individuals from various government departments and agencies.
According to Omar, a difference of one degree could cause the "kiblat" direction to stray as much as 128km.- Bernama
